Although I’ve only just begun to do more high fashion type imagery it is something that I have fallen in love with. My inspiration with portrait photography comes from the work of George Hurrell who developed a style of lighting and use of shadows that he used to capture Hollywood’s elite in the 1930’s and 1940’s. I’ve been able to incorporate that style, to some degree at least, into this fashion work that I have sought out. As you can see from the images above it works out quite nicely in some cases. The above work with Justine is a great example of my style using simple techniques to create memorable images. They are also examples of what can be accomplished with 1 look in 1 hour which is a special that I run from time to time.
This style obviously doesn’t work for all though. When going after more of a commercial look I back off the shadows a bit and do my best to create images with strong compositions and emotions that come through the image. The images below are examples of this type of work.
glamour.
My Hurrell inspired lighting style lends itself most easily to glamour photography. It is with the shadows that you can create something that is sensual and emotional for the viewer to grab hold of. To me these images speak for themselves.
bands.
I may not do it often, but i do love concert photography as well. It’s been a while since I’ve been poking around stage snapping pics, but I definitely love to do so. Most of my work was done on film and was stolen from my car years back. Time to start rebuilding the concert portfolio though.
